Dance Costume Size Guide
Most costume failures on stage are fit failures, not fabric failures. Four measurements decide whether a costume works, and they are not the ones people usually send us.
Send Four Numbers, Not One Age
"She's nine" tells us almost nothing — two nine-year-olds can differ by fifteen centimetres. What we need is height, chest or bust, waist, and the length from waist to ankle. With those four we can tell you over WhatsApp whether a set will fit before you spend an hour travelling.
Why Stage Fit Is Not Everyday Fit
A dance costume is fitted tighter at the waist and looser through the legs than ordinary clothing. The waist has to hold the pleats and the belt without shifting during the item; the legs have to allow full araimandi. A costume that feels comfortable standing still is often too loose to stay in place once the dancer moves.
The Araimandi Test
The single most useful thing to do at a fitting: put the costume on, sit into araimandi, and hold it. If the pleated fan splays awkwardly, the waist rides up, or the shoulder pulls, the costume is wrong regardless of what the tape says. Everything else can be adjusted; this cannot be judged from measurements alone.
Growing Children and Two-Month Gaps
If the performance is more than a month away and the dancer is between eight and fourteen, they may grow before the date. Tell us the timeline — we will either allow for it or schedule a re-check closer to the day rather than sizing exactly to today.
Blouse Sizing for Groups
For group items the blouse is the constraint, not the skirt. Send a rough count by blouse size across the group. It is normal for a twenty-person group to span six sizes, and it is far better to know that in advance than to discover it on rehearsal day.
Measurements to Send Before You Visit
- Height, measured without footwear
- Chest or bust at the fullest point
- Waist where the costume belt will sit — not the trouser waist
- Waist to ankle length
- The dancer's age and the performance date
- For groups: a count by blouse size
